Due to increasing health concerns relating to the spread of the Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19), the REN XUE Teachers Continuing Education and Annual Public Retreat in Portugal has been cancelled.

The decision was not an easy one and we appreciate this decision may significantly inconvenience many of you. However, we hope that you can understand that at the heart of this decision was the health and wellbeing of our REN XUE community.

We have also prepared some information below that we hope will answer many of your questions. If you have further questions about your specific circumstances that are not answered below, please contact our Executive Director, Trina King, on

The Decision to Cancel

Why has this decision been made to cancel Yuan Tze’s US and European events in 2020?
The safety and wellbeing of our community is our top priority.   Due to rapidly escalating health concerns relating to the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19), it is no longer possible to deliver our retreats without risk to our community. As such, we have decided to cancel our US and European retreats and events.

We recognize that the timing of this decision may significantly inconvenience many of you. However, we have made this decision out of deep respect and concern for the health and wellbeing of our registrants, staff, vendors, and our global REN XUE community.

Is it possible this decision may be reversed prior to the event if the situation improves?

No.  Now the decision has been made to cancel the events, this decision will not change. Even if the coronavirus (COVID-19) situation significantly and unexpectedly improves, the cancellation remains a final decision.

Does this decision also include the live streaming event?

Yes, unfortunately, it does. Yuan Tze and Melissa will not be travelling to the US, so there will be no live streaming event at this stage.

Fees and Refunds

Will my registration fee be refunded?
As per the REN XUE International Cancellation Policy, you will be refunded the full fee amount paid.

  • In order to support us to administer these refunds, we ask that you fill in a request for refund for the May Retreat in Odemira, Portugal, please click here.
  • For refunds for the April Retreat in California, USA, please refer to the letter you were sent by the REN XUE of the Americas’ retreat organizers.

Travel Expenses and Visas

I have already paid for my travel, what happens to that cost?
You will need to contact your travel provider or travel insurance provider about obtaining a refund. Please note that many travel insurance providers have a pandemic exclusion.

We have prepared an Official Letter of Cancellation, should you wish to present this to your provider. Our hope is that this will encourage them to honour all travel refunding requests from attendees.

What do I do if I have a travel visa that I will now no longer require due to the event cancellation?
If your visa is affected by our decision to cancel our events, we recommend that you contact the immigration organization that issued your visa to understand the options available to you.

Do you have an official letter of cancellation?
Yes, we have prepared an Official Letter of Cancellation in the hope that it may help in your request for a refund.

Teacher’s Continuing Education Program

How will REN XUE Support Teachers in Continuing Education Training 2020?
We are beginning to explore ways in which we can offer Continuing Education in an online format.

As soon as we have more information, we will share it with you via the Teacher Update newsletter. If you are not subscribed to this, please contact Bridget via

Will a certificate of completion for my next completed level of Ren Xue Teacher Training be sent to me?

As we will not be able to distribute and celebrate REN XUE Teachers passing new qualifications at the retreat, certificates will be given to newly qualified teachers at the next available opportunity.

Future Events

Are the November Continuing Education Training event and Public Retreat in Rotorua, New Zealand still going ahead?
Yes, at this stage these events are still going ahead. However, we will continue to monitor the Conoravirus situation carefully and will let you know as soon as possible if we need to cancel this event. We will take advice from WHO, the New Zealand Ministry of Health and local Public Health Authorities in making this decision.

How will I obtain my certificates for a new level of qualification?
Our team is currently assessing the impact this cancellation may have on the capacity required for the November retreat. When we have more details we will share this with you.

What other action is REN XUE International taking?

The health and safety of our REN XUE community, teachers and staff are a priority. We will continue to monitor the situation closely and follow the recommendations of WHO and each country’s Public Health Authority.

We are providing guidance and support to our REN XUE teachers, but as this is a rapidly evolving situation, we advise that they and their students should ultimately take direction from WHO and their country’s Public Health Authority

About Coronavirus (COVID-19)

What is Coronavirus?

Recently, an outbreak of a new coronavirus disease now called COVID-19 (sometimes called novel coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2 or 2019-nCoV) was identified. Coronaviruses are a large and diverse family of viruses which cause illnesses such as the common cold, severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS).

For more details about the virus, please visit the Question & Answer page on the World Health Organization’s (WHO) website.

Most people who are infected with Covid-19 will have mild symptoms, but it is a higher risk for elderly people and those with other medical conditions.

If you are interested, you can also review the situation reports on WHO website.

What are the symptoms of coronavirus?
Symptoms reported for patients with coronavirus include mild to severe respiratory illness, similar to influenza. This includes fever and respiratory symptoms such as cough, shortness of breath, and difficulty breathing.

What countries have confirmed cases of Coronavirus (COVID-19)?
To view an up-to-date list of countries with confirmed cases of coronavirus, please view the WHO Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) Situation dashboard.

Staying Healthy

How to Protect Yourself from Coronavirus

Stay aware of the latest information on the COVID-19 outbreak, available on WHO website and through your national and local public health authority. Most people who become infected experience mild illness and recover, but it can be more severe for others.

Practical steps from WHO

WHO recommend some practical and helpful steps to protect yourself from the virus – you can read more about these here.

We have also provided a summary table below of recommendations from WHO and other health professionals below. Take care of your health and protect others by doing the following:

Group of behaviors Behavior
Hand hygiene Wash hands regularly with soap and water for at least 20 sections

Always wash hands:

  • after coughing and sneezing
  • after touching nose or mouth
  • after caring for the sick
  • before, during, and after food preparation
  • before eating
  • after using the toilet
  • after handling animals or animal waste

If soap and water are not available use an alcohol-based hand sanitiser. This is particularly important after taking public transport.

You may wish to keep a bottle of hand sanitizer available at each of your home’s entrances, as well as in your car for use after getting gas/fuel or touching other contaminated objects when you can’t immediately wash your hands.

Surface hygiene Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces in the home and work environment.
Respiratory Cough or sneeze into a tissue (preferred). Stifle sneeze as much as possible. Only use the crook of your elbow if you have to as, if infected, the virus will remain infections on your clothing for some time.
Immediately dispose of the tissue in a closed rubbish bin after coughing or sneezing.
Touching Do not touch mouth, eyes or nose with unwashed hands.
Avoid handshaking. Use a fist bump, slight bow or elbow bump etc.
Only use your knuckle or elbow to touch light switches. elevator buttons, etc.. Lift the gasoline dispenser with a paper towel or use a disposable glove.
Open doors with your closed fist or hip – do not grasp the handle with your hand, unless there is no other way to open the door. Especially important on bathroom and post office/commercial doors.
Use disinfectant wipes at the stores when they are available, including wiping the handle and child seat in shopping trolleys/grocery carts.
Self-isolation If symptomatic or otherwise advised to, stay at home for 14 days.
Social distancing If not caring for a symptomatic person, avoid contact and proximity. Maintain a distance between yourself and other people, particularly those who are coughing, sneezing, or have a fever.
Healthcare If experiencing a fever, cough, and difficulting breathing seek medical advice early and describe previous travel history to the healthcare professional.
If you have recently arrived from specified countries within the last 14 days, call a telephone Health helpline.
Personal protective equipment If caring for someone who has been diagnosed, wear facemasks, eye protection, and gloves.
Food Safety Avoid eating raw or undercooked animal products. Handle raw meat, milk, or animal organs in such a way as to avoid cross-contamination with other foods.

Practical steps from REN XUE

In addition, we have many tools in REN XUE which can enhance our health and wellbeing. Here are some simple suggestions:

  • Maintain a good quantity and quality of Qi in your daily life both through regular practice and both being in and returning to a good state wherever possible.
  • Feel and see yourself as strong and healthy, relaxed, calm and natural
  • Trust that you and your loved ones and the whole of humanity and the planet will move through this time in the best possible way.
  • Build a qi field full of healthy information for yourself and everyone, often
  • Use the methods of Yuan Gong to stay healthy, all of them are useful, but none of them are a panacea for all, as always, if you or someone close to you becomes ill or concerned, seek medical advice as soon as possible.
  • Specifically, Squats, Tian Yuan and Di Yuan are wonderful if you are just starting to experience something such as a sniffle, slight sore throat, blocked nose, or anything else respiratory in the early stages, and can at times clear the disturbance out altogether when it is only just beginning (but may need to be repeated).
  • Ren Yuan is a great method for strengthening the overall health of the physical body and provides the opportunity for the channels which connect the whole body and allow qi to flow in a healthy way between the organ systems, to do their job.
  • Xia Yuan is a great way of building up organ qi, strength and health, and is a very good support for pattern work too, and at this time can be practised regularly to build the qi of all the organ systems including the lungs.
  • As well as seeking appropriate health care and help, if you can, also use any fear or anxiety as triggers to calm and love yourself and those around you, and fuel your understanding of yourself, your patterns and life and to grow.
