Yuan Qigong is a practice of beautiful moving and still meditations, using the body, mind, breath and Qi energy. Its foundations rest in Chinese tradition, but western scientific and psychological findings are incorporated, so Yuan Qigong is a comprehensive discipline. Practicing Yuan Qigong helps to increase mental clarity, improves internal strength and stability, and helps us understand the patterns of thought that inadvertently support negative emotions and illness.
During a Yuan Qigong practice, movements, postures and breathing are accompanied by an active direction of consciousness towards a meditation summed up in these six verses.
Awareness inside the body, feel the emptiness and spaciousness within
Expand the awareness out, becoming one with the universe
Draw the awareness back to the body, calm and peaceful
Open to the universe with reverence and utmost respect
Let the bright universe nurture the heart with compassion and love
Feel relaxed and joyful. Qi flowing harmoniously and smoothly.
Giving ourselves the time to experience these verses during practice helps shift our internal state towards a more unified, harmonious one. Once this transition begins, the deeper benefits of Yuan Qigong become evident. Although a Yuan Qigong practice has many physical benefits, students often find that the greatest value comes in less tangible forms. Simply stated, Yuan Qigong opens the heart, allowing trust, openness, love and gratitude to flow in.
