Jue Cha When Unhealthy Patterns are at Work

Nov 30, 2020

I trust you have been working on Jue Cha and refining your practice along the way.

Jue Cha is using Shen’s awareness to observe. It is a great tool for transforming patterns and developing realization and wisdom.

Most of the time Shen’s awareness cannot manifest because patterns are in charge of our lives. It is therefore necessary to make an effort to help it manifest. An effective way is to be in the state where unhealthy patterns can be relatively inactive. This is why we cultivate a particular state (relaxed, calm, natural, unified and harmonious) as the preparation for Jue Cha practice. As we work to make this state the normal state of life, we are facilitating Shen to constantly keep its ‘light’ on.

However, this doesn’t mean Shen cannot exercise its awareness when we are not in this particular state. In fact, it is even more necessary to exercise Jue Cha when we are disturbed. Yes, unhealthy patterns must be at work when we are disturbed. However, the unpleasant feeling we feel are the ‘after effect’ of that brief moment of pattern activity. In the midst of experiencing the disturbance, as long as we remember to take the initiative to come back to our Jingshen (heart, consciousness and Shen/True Self) and be unified, the light of Shen can manifest again. This will help us see what has been going on more clearly, including what patterns were triggered, and clear the disturbance.

Exercising Jue Cha when we are disturbed is even more important and arguably effective than when we are in a good state because this is often the time significant changes take place. When we have practiced Jue Cha this way consistently, gradually we will be able to see patterns the moment they are triggered. This would often put these patterns to rest immediately. In other words, patterns will not create any substantial effect. When this works well, our Jue Cha can even transform these patterns on the spot so they will no longer exist.

There is no finish line to the practice of Jue Cha. No matter how well it is working, it can only keep getting better. The important thing is ‘keep practicing’.

Enjoy your Jue Cha practice!!!
